The Scallop Festival is the keystone of these attracting thousands to taste the local delicacy. Whitianga has a lovely calm bay and beach that is ideal for young families and safe for swimming for much of the year. Some visitors come to stay for a while and some remain for a lifetime.

A visit to Ferry Landing wharf, the oldest working wharf in the southern hemisphere is a short ferry ride from Whitianga Wharf, and provides easy access to Whitianga Rock, an ancient Maori pa site.

For visitors who have not returned to Whitianga in a while, the reaction is usually the same. "Whitianga has changed a lot". The Coromandel District has a resident population of 26,178. The Mercury Bay Area School role is steadily increasing with over 900 students enrolled as new families come to settle in Mercury Bay – Te Whanganui a Hei .
