Some of the Harbourmasters and Maritime Officers tasks include:
- Maintenance of navigation aids and markers such as buoys, beacons, and lights, within harbour limits.
- Directing the removal (and in some cases, the disposal) of wrecks and derelict vessels.
- Identification, notification, or removal where possible, of navigation hazards within a navigable waterway, such as a drifting vessel.
- Maintaining navigation signage and information at boat ramps.
- Management of moorings and mooring consents.
- On-water patrols - Ensuring compliance with the Navigation Safety Bylaw through education and enforcement.
