Mercury Bay Cancer Support Trust

The group began supporting people in 1988, with the current Trust established in 2017. We support families living with a cancer diagnosis in the wider Mercury Bay area of the Coromandel Peninsula (Whangapoua to Whenuakite and Hot Water Beach).  

The Trust is made up of 5 volunteer Trustees and two part-time staff. This team provide oversight to around 50 volunteers, whose tasks include running the bookshop, delivering equipment, supporter and navigator roles and biographers. 

Clients can be referred by nurses, doctors or other agencies, but a referral is not necessary - anyone with cancer can contact us directly to seek support. All our staff and volunteers maintain strict confidentiality and respect the rights and wishes of the client. 

What the Mercury Bay Cancer Support Trust does

The Trust provides practical and emotional support to people experiencing cancer. Support can be provided in a variety of ways and may include:

•  Face-to-face or phone support
•  Working with clients to explore how the Trust might help
•  Monthly morning teas with guest speakers or a facilitated discussion
• Connecting those supporting a person with cancer to a Caring for Carers group
•  Sharing of relevant resource material and information
• Arranging access to wellbeing supports such as massage, counselling, physiotherapy
• Facilitate accessing practical help at home when necessary
• Helping people understand their entitlements regarding transport assistance and what transport options are available
•  Providing information and connection to other agencies
• The loan and delivery of hospital beds and other specialist equipment
•  Access to workshops such as Look good Feel better
• Supporting at clinical appointments if needed.
