We all know that having enough time to tackle the everyday tasks and demands of a business is challenging. That is where new start-up business Cleverly can help. I spoke with business owner Hattie Crawshaw about what Cleverly offers and how her new business has been able to give time back to local Coromandel business owners.
Last year Hattie launched Cleverly, offering support for small businesses, individuals, and community groups in the Coromandel. Cleverly supports local businesses with a range of helpful and practical services including, Facebook and Social Media, Bookkeeping and Payroll, as well as Website Building, Hosting and Management. Cleverly offers an easy and efficient way for businesses to get things done.
Cleverly offers an extra set of professional hands for local businesses so they can focus on what they do best. Whether it’s tackling everyday tasks like posting on Facebook, or one-off projects, such as building a new website, the team at Cleverly can help. I love working with local businesses and am motivated by happy clients. I’m at my best with a freshly made cuppa, in front of the computer, ticking off my clients to do list and developing business ideas to help them grow.

Quick fire questions
All About Whitianga: How did you get the idea for Cleverly?
Hattie Crawshaw: I have enjoyed being a ‘go-to’ person with family and friends over the years when they want to get something done and are not quite sure how to go about it. Whether its writing a new CV, building presentations, preparing marketing material, or posting on social media, I have always been motivated to use the skills I have to help. It seemed a natural progression to pull all of my experience together and enter into my own business to offer support to other businesses.
What is at the core of your business model?
The Cleverly mission is to provide flexible and efficient support across all areas of business that clients just do not have the time or resources to complete. Our team provides bespoke services to fit our client’s needs. We are always up for a chat over the phone or a coffee at your local to see if there is an opportunity to introduce something new and helpful to our clients.
What is an achievement you are proud of?
After our daughter was born and I stopped working full-time, I had the time and motivation to develop and launch the Cleverly business. I completed my MBA at the end of April which was a significant milestone and I felt it was a great opportunity to put it to use by starting something new.
Have you always worked with SME’s?
I have a genuine love and interest of all things business. During my career I have worked for both large corporate firms and small businesses in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. My last corporate roles were working with Campari and Campbell Arnott’s as well as working on individual business accounts in freelance management roles. After travelling through 2018 my husband and I returned to New Zealand and worked in the family demolition company in the Manawatu before moving to the Coromandel to bring up our daughter and start a new adventure.
What is most important to you in working with your clients?
My number one priority is customer service. I want our customers to be happy and feel listened to. Whatever our clients needs are, Cleverly aims to find the right tools and solutions to complete the task or project to the highest standard.
What are your challenges as a business owner?
A top challenge for me is most likely familiar to many business owners. Balancing family life and business! The transition of being a new Mum, which has been thoroughly enjoyable, as well as managing my business has certainly been a learning curve, albeit a fun one.
What additional support do you use for your own business?
I have always been a fan of mentors and have had mentors throughout my career. Whether it’s a chat over the phone or asking for an extra set of eyes over an important document, utilising the skills of those that are more experienced has been extremely important. I aim to build a network of inspiring and motivated people that have the skills and experience to support me through the growth of my business.
Bonus Tip – Favourite place to visit
After moving home to New Zealand after several years working overseas Hattie and her husband chose the Coromandel to raise their young baby and Golden Retriever puppy and could not be happier with a move to the coast.
If you’re visiting us in the Coromandel this summer, I highly recommend a trip to Wharf Road Café. This local spot is a frequent haunt of ours and perfect for family, friends and business meetings. Pop in for a cuppa, and if you’re hungry order the Wharf Road Complete…yum
