From Engineering to Culinary Passions

If Siddharth “Sid” Rana, a new contract manager in the Thames and Hauraki District Council areas, wasn’t an engineer he’d be a chef. And, although Sid’s basically a local these days, his heritage in India’s ‘spicy north’ in the Himalayas would no doubt ensure his restaurant had people queuing out the door.

Fortunately for Ventia and the Hauraki-Coromandel region though, Sid has chosen to invest his significant civil engineering skills and global expertise in New Zealand’s transport networks.

While his primary function – and the purpose of Ventia’s contract in the Hauraki-Coromandel region  – is ensuring locals get home efficiently and safely, there’s a much wider community benefit aspect to Sid’s role.

He has been tasked with ensuring the community benefits in tangible ways from the contract, and in this endeavour his wealth of knowledge, global experience, and fresh perspective is a massive boost.

Sid's lifelong exposure to diverse environments and cultures has nurtured his ability to connect with people from all walks of life, Sid explains, his father's position in the Indian army instilled a sense of both discipline and adaptability in him. The family moved from place to place every three years.

I take pride in my ability to make the most of every experience. I want to bring a fresh approach to this role. I aim to bring my expertise and apply it to the Hauraki-Coromandel District road network.

The road to the Coromandel

After earning a degree in civil engineering from one of India’s top universities, the SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Sid secured a role with Royal Dutch Shell, one of the world’s largest companies.

Starting as an engineer technician, Sid’s passion for civil engineering, strong work ethic and commitment to continuous learning propelled him upwards through the company ranks.

My personal and professional journey has been defined by determination, a desire to be accountable for results, and a belief in the power of teamwork and empowering colleagues to grow. The success of any project lies in the strength of the team behind it. And, I’m strong believer in fostering high performing teams to get the job done.

However, the demanding work-life balance finally demanded a sea change. So Sid’s love for both nature and adventure led him to New Zealand, firstly Hamilton, and now the Coromandel.

Now working for Ventia on the Coromandel Peninsula and Hauraki Plains he enjoys exploring the region’s breathtaking landscapes and developed a deep appreciation for the outdoors.

Looking forward to bringing service excellence to clients across the region, Sid was instrumental in the successful Ventia tender to Hauraki District Council.

Now his goal Is to deliver exceptional results for his Coromandel-Hauraki community. And just to make sure, he’s joined the Rural Fire Brigade as a volunteer firefighter. No plans for a restaurant just yet, though!
