Ferry Landing to Shakespeare Cliff walk

What to Expect

Join this fascinating guided walk which starts at the historic Mercury Bay Museum and then takes you across the river to Ferry Landing and up to Shakespeare Cliff. Local members of the Mercury Bay Historical Society will be your guides through this historical adventure where you will learn about the history of unique sites in the Mercury Bay area and the links to the HMS Buffalo 175th commemorations. Numbers are limited so registration prior is essential!
This guided walk will be packed full of intriguing information - and a chance to enjoy a great scenic walk with others! John Jackman and Brenda Sewell will be your local expert guides. They will cover local points of interest along the way, answer any questions you may have and you will be able to view where the HMS Buffalo was anchored and then drifted from its' course to the Mercury Bay where she floundered and sank 175 years ago.

Things to note:
• This walk will be at least 2.5 hours and participants should have good walking shoes, and be prepared with wet weather clothing as and if required
• Participants should be able to walk uphill and on many steps (If you are unsure please discuss with the Museum staff regarding your suitability for this walk)

Registration Details:
• Registration essential - please book by phoning or calling into the Mercury Bay Museum as numbers are limited for this walk
• Gold coin donation - please give your coin to the guides on the day of the walk
(these donations will go to the Museum for exhibition maintenance)
• Please note you will need to bring cash to pay for your return ferry fee of $6 (adults)

On the day of the walk:
* Walk starts at 10am
• Assemble at the Mercury Bay Museum 11a Esplanade, Whitianga to meet your local guides John Jackman and Brenda Sewell from the Mercury Bay Historical Society
• In the event of severe wet weather an alternative will be to have a guided talk at the museum
