A tree-lined village alongside a sweeping beach that was developed in the 1980’s with resort living in mind. 

The attraction of Matarangi is the beautiful white 4.5 km sandy beach that is ideal for swimming and surfing when the conditions are right. You can take your pick of leisure activities in Matarangi as it boasts a world class 18-hole golf course with a licensed club house, restaurant and pro-shop. The town also has a bowling green and there are several public tennis courts.

Matarangi Bluff Track wetlands

Matarangi Bluff Track

Providing spectacular views over Matarangi, Kuaotunu and into the ranges behind on this walk through regenerating forest.

In the regenerating bush behind Rings Beach there is an easy two-hour walking circuit winding through native bush with extensive views over the northern peninsula and towards Great Mercury Island from high points. Visitors are urged to make sure boots are clean and the spray bottle provided be used to help prevent the spread of Kauri Dieback disease. Access to the track is from the end of Goldfields Drive in Matarangi, or from either end of Rings Beach, with adequate parking handy to all three entrances.

Getting to Matarangi

Matarangi is approximately thirty minutes drive from either Whitianga or Coromandel town. Travel along State Highway 25 on the Te Rerenga-Kuaotunu Road until you see the signpost for Matarangi. Turn onto Matarangi Road, which will take you into the village. View in map.

Must Do's

  • Book in a round of golf at the picturesque all weather The Dunes golf course (with pro shop) which was designed by Sir Bob Charles.
  • Take a long stroll along Matarangi Beach or short walk around the Matarangi Spit.
  • Enjoy a full day of entertainment, and delicious local food and fine wine at the A Taste of Matarangi festival held in April each year.
  • Display your fishing talents at the annual Easter Saturday Fishing Competition hosted by the Matarangi Volunteer Fire Force.
