Shopping

Purchase local homemade crafts and produce at the Coroglen Farmers Market, which run from Sunday Labour weekend until the end of summer at the historic Gumtown Hall on the main road SH25.

Must Do's

  • Kayak from Whitianga to Coroglen – best view of some beautiful scenery. Be careful of the tides as the Waiwawa River is tidal and if you come in a boat you could get stuck or run a ground. Kayaks and inflatables should still be aware but should be able to navigate the way right up to the bridge near The Coroglen Tavern.

Local Tips

  • Experienced walkers would enjoy getting back to nature on the Pinnacles Walk from the Rangihau Road end / Moss Creek Junction /Rangihau. It is steep but well worth the effort once you get there because you can see for miles on a clear day. Contact the Department of Conservation Kauaeranga Visitor Centre (ph: 867 9080) for information about this walk.
  • Coroglen River Raft Race –It’s an annual thing, starting at Te Kauanga Rd Coroglen where homemade rafts travel back down stream to Whitianga. Sadly not all rafts manage to stay intact! It is a lot of fun, just watch out for your fellow rafters who may bombard you with flour or egg missiles. The raft race is usually around January or February.

Reserve

The old Coroglen sale yards on State Highway 25 by the one-way bridge have been turned into a park with a BBQ.

Public Toilets

  • Old Coroglen Saleyard Reserve – State Highway 25 near the one-way bridge before the Coroglen Tavern.

More About Coroglen

The first school in Coroglen opened on May 20th 1896 when the settlement was called Gumtown. At this time the local population were attracted to the area as gum diggers, kauri loggers and some as early settlers to establish farming blocks. As a result Coroglen today is mainly a farming and life style community. It still has a small country primary school with two classrooms to cater for years 1-8 and has a motto that reflects its community "from the land our strength".
