Money raised as part of Daffodil Day street and shop collections will go towards cancer care for patients and their family, education and awareness programmes, and life-saving cancer research in the Waikato-Bay of Plenty area.

Our district is remote from major hospitals and oncology support, and is home to the highest number of residents in the 65+ age group in NZ. We are appreciative of donations made by the public on Daffodil Day, and also of the amazing group of volunteers who make this collection day happen in our region. Money that we raise supports those with cancer and their families.

Robyn Lawry – Mercury Bay Daffodil Day Coordinator

How to donate to Daffodil Day

In person and online donations are welcome for this year's donations. Whitianga collection locations will also have EFTPOS machines available.

Volunteers will be in force throughout the Mercury Bay for the public to make in person donations and collect an artificial reusable daffodil pin at the following collection locations:

Friday August 29th*

  • Whitianga fixed locations – 9am -5pm at Countdown, New World and Tangos shoe shop, Buffalo Beach Four Square (8am-6pm), industrial area Moewai (morning)
  • Whitianga ‘Mobile roaming volunteer collectors’ - on main street and visiting cafes
  • Central locations in Cooks Beach and Hahei.

Thursday August 29th*

  • Mercury Bay Fishing Club - evening collection.

*Please note collection locations may be subject to change. Fresh daffodils may be unavailable at collection points this year, however reusable daffodil pins will be on hand in return for donations.

Online donations

For those unable to make in person donations online donations can be made to Daffodil Day as follows:

Over 30 years of collecting for Daffodil Day

For 30+ years Mercury Bay Cancer Support Trust volunteers have been collecting in Kuaotunu in the North, to Hahei in the south and Whitianga as a collection hub. The Trust and it's volunteers collect for Daffodil Day on behalf of the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Branch of the Cancer Society.

The first Daffodil Day collection for the Waikato-Bay of Plenty branch of the Cancer Society was organised in 1989 by Jenny Edwards, founder of the Mercury Bay Cancer Support Group. As the group evolved the Mercury Bay Cancer Support group became a registered Charitable Trust in 2017 and over the years the collections have been so successful and the community so generous that the Mercury Bay community consistently raised the biggest collection amount in the region.

About the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Cancer Society

The Waikato-Bay of Plenty Cancer Society supports those with cancer in these regions with funding, monthly visits by support nurses and the provision of free of charge accommodation at the Cancer Society/Lions Lodge in Hamilton as well as hospital visits and practical support. This includes facilitating meetings for cancer sufferers and their families in conjunction with local support groups such as the Mercury Bay Cancer Support Trust.

Mercury Bay Cancer support Trust

Mercury Bay Cancer Support Trust volunteers fundraise throughout the year through its popular second-hand book shop. The book shop is generously supported by locals and visitors and fully staffed by volunteers.
