The 90 strong orchestra consisted of musicians aged 16 to 26 playing instruments including brass, string, woodwind and percussion instruments. The young musicians played with energy, passion and precision across an engaging programme that included:
- Copland - Fanfare for the Common Man
- Vaughan Williams - The Lark Ascending (soloist: Jim Wu, violin)
- Ravel - Pavane for a Dead Princess
- Mussorgsky - Pictures at an Exhibition.
The Creative Mercury Bay Trust worked closely with this premier regional youth orchestra to bring them back to Whitianga as part of a celebration of a decade of performing in the Mercury Bay area.
It was such a privilege to have the Auckland Youth Orchestra in Whitianga. These talented young musicians provided our audience on the night with an exceptionally unique and moving performance.
