Free entry for Whitianga Art Sale
The Art Expo committee is pleased to provide this fabulous opportunity for artists to showcase their work. Its central location makes it very accessible to the public, and we hope with SH25a now open, that there will be lots of visitors to our area over the long weekend. Entry is free and the committee hopes this encourages people to come and have a look at the talented artists work from the community, and hopefully buy something to take home.
The exhibition will open on Friday evening May 31st and then be open over the long weekend until Monday June 3rd 2024.
Artists Encouraged to exhibit
An email is about to be sent out to the artists who have previously exhibited at Art Expo inviting them to the 2024 exhibition. Contact will also be made with artists who have expressed an interest in taking part.
We know that there are so many talented artists in the Coromandel community and rather than risk missing them with an invite, we’d like them to contact us by emailing us and we will send them an entry form with details of the event. Whether you paint, sculpt, work in mixed media, are a potter, jewellery artist, wood turner or wood carver, photographer…basically if you create visual art then this expo is for you.
Mike Brown - Art Expo Committee Chair
This year artists, who sell an item during the Art Expo have the ability to refresh their stand with a replacement piece of art during the event. The Art Expo Committee would like artists to have as much opportunity as possible to sell their artwork.
Artists interested in exhibiting should contact the committee via email here.
New Student competition
This year the Art Expo also has an exciting new competition for Coromandel Peninsula school students in years 11-13 with $500 as the first prize for the winning artwork (2nd $250 and 3rd $100) which will be judged by the Whitianga Art Group committee.
Students are asked to create a visual artwork that depicts life on the Coromandel Peninsula either ‘past or present’. Interested students should either talk to their school art teacher or contact the Art Expo committee via email for entry details. The winners in this competition will be announced on opening night and all student entries will be on display on that night and for the duration of the Art Expo. If students want, they can even sell their artwork at the event.
Project Mammogram
Project Mammogram is an important initiative that aims to improve breast cancer detection and treatment outcomes for women in remote and rural areas of the Coromandel Peninsula.
The project target is to raise $350,000 so a 3D mammogram unit can be based in Whitianga. This will mean that women from the eastern side of the peninsula may not have to travel to Thames or Hamilton for mammograms.
