The inaugural Aon Whitianga Marathon (42km) was a challenge that rewarded athletes with the stunning Mercury Bay views promised. The marathon was won by David Haunschmidt for the men in a blistering time of 2 hours 37 minute, and Naomi Brand in 3 hours 11 minutes for the women. This field had a good day out there on a course of two very different halves, including the unique ferry ride at the 22km mark.
Athletes enjoyed the new flat, fast single lap course for the half marathon with James Murphy taking out first place for the men in a time of 1 hour 17 minutes and Maddie Dillon for the women in a time of 1 hour 20 minutes.
Many friends and family’s enjoyed the 10km and 5km distances together, both saw large numbers of entrants and cheering supporters. Athletes commented that they were that were blown away with the support from the locals, course marshals and aid stations crews – it was like the whole town was hosting the event.
Paora Raharaha (aka the Gumboot man) ran the inaugural marathon distance in his gumboots with Viani Pitman at is his side to continue their fundraising efforts for the running group Huntly Team Little Big Bots. Paora had inspired many students at Mercury Bay Area School on the Friday sharing his story and aspirations.
I am very happy with the event day and outcomes. We always want to deliver safe, exciting events and that’s what we have been able to achieve with the backing of our community. The positive feedback we have received from runners, sponsors and our event staff has been overwhelming. I’d like to thank our sponsors, volunteers and community for helping deliver a great day to athletes and supporters her in Whitianga.
