Mercury Bay Resource Recovery Centre needs your help!

The Mercury Bay Resource Recovery Centre Trust have recently announced that they have secured a site and funding for their community operation to divert waste from local landfills. Now they are calling on the community to come up with a catchy name and also volunteers to help bring the new centre to life.

Volunteers needed for new centre

Do you feel we all need to do something about minimising waste? Are you passionate about doing what you can to help? The Mercury Bay Resource Recovery Trust  (MBRRCT) have exciting plans and projects on the horizon that need hands, minds and passion.

Some of the skills and expertise they are seeking include but are not limited to bookkeeping, legal advice, project management, fundraising, sponsorship coordination and human resources. While specific knowledge and experience in these areas will be highly prized, you don’t have to be an expert to join the MBRRCT volunteer collective.

The Trust is looking for hands-on people who like to get things done, outside (and inside) the box thinkers, dreamers, idealists and realists. Even if you’ve never been involved with a trust before. If you are passionate about the environment and enthusiastic about driving change in our community, then they'd like your help.

About the Mercury Bay Resource Recovery Trust

Mercury Bay Resource Recovery Centre Trust is a charitable trust created in 2020 to plan, establish, maintain and operate a waste reduction and recycling centre in Whitianga. The Centre is based on the successful business model of the Seagull Centre in Thames and will be located at the new Refuse Transfer Station (RTS) on Moewai Road.

The core purpose of the Trust is to build the awareness, passion, capacity and confidence of our community to accelerate waste minimisation locally & be a leading voice in change nationally. The team comprises six trustees and one committee member, who volunteer their time and skills and are passionate about reducing, recycling and reusing.

Mission: We believe that through the power of education and ease of access, we can enable our community to help themselves minimise waste. We intentionally focus on the development of long-term sustainable facilities, education programmes and waste minimisation initiatives that empower and enable the people we serve.

Vision: We envision a Coromandel Peninsula in which waste minimisation is part of our DNA. By leading the way and establishing pathways for our community to choose and prioritise meaningful waste reduction, we aim to encourage, stimulate and promote reuse, recycling, and refurbishment everywhere.

Naming Competition

Maybe you have heard of the MBRRCT sister site in Thames, the Seagull Centre? Or the Xtreme Zero Waste in Raglan? Or Trash Palace in Porirua? What you’ll notice is they all have catchy names that have become loved memorable labels.

The Mercury Bay Resource Recovery Centre needs a great name too! And that’s where you come in - help find a fitting name. They are looking for something catchy, something connected to the cause (No Time to Waste), something as iconic as spades at hot water beach and surf boards at Black Jacks - something that speaks from the heart about the beautiful Mercury Bay.

Based at the Moewai Road Refuse Transfer Station (RTS) in Whitianga, the Trust will open a Drop-off Centre to offload useful goods before they hit the landfill, storage and work areas to prepare materials for their next purpose, and a shop to on-sell items at reasonable cost. The operation will serve all of the Mercury Bay communities - from Whenuakite to Kuaotunu and everywhere in between.

You can enter your name suggestion via the All About Whitianga competition page and be in with a chance to win a $200 Prezzy Card. Competition closes, 5pm September 2, 2022.
