Multi Hull Regatta on the water in Mercury Bay

Sailors and crews that have a Hobie Cat, Prindle, Tornado, A-Class or similar vessels are encouraged to view the full event details here.

If you are keen to join in on some fun and exciting races in a stunning location, we’d love to see you and your team here. Last year we hosted a highly successful fourth regatta with 35 boats. This year we are hoping to build on the number of boats registered. This is the Peninsula's signature regatta where competitors and spectators continue to enjoy our stunning race course on and off the water.

Jonathan Kline, Vice Commodore Mercury Bay Boating Club.

The Regatta Race Course

The Multi Hull Regatta race course has what is described by Vice Commodore Kline as an amphitheatre-like quality to it. Rocky islands and dramatic stone arches lie just offshore while sheer cliffs and both white and black sand beaches ring the perimeter. The race course offers scenic round the bay races, large triangles and sausages, windward leeward and destination sails.

Regatta Schedule Overview

Crews are invited to arrive anytime through out the week before the regatta right through to Saturday morning. Friday afternoon social and 'non competitive' races are planned for crews to get a feel for the local conditions. Saturday will see three to four races followed by a social function for participants and supporters. Another two or three races are planned for Sunday morning with prize giving following so visitors can be on the road in the early afternoon if they wish. Prizes have been donated by local and out of town sponsors.

Past Events Hosted by Mercury Bay Boating Club

In addition to hosting this event from 2019 to the present, the Club has hosted an Opti Nationals, a Paper Tiger Nationals, Elliott 5.9 Nationals, Waikato Champs, Starling Nationals and several Mistral regattas. In 2017, the club hosted the Weta trimaran rendezvous. Most famously in 1988, the Club challenged for the America’s Cup.

Impact of Cyclone Hale and Gabriel on the Clubhouse

Cyclones Hale and Gabriel forced the closure of the MBBC clubhouse.  But a building does not make a club, rather the members and supporters and so despite the lack of facilities, MBBC is forging ahead with its junior sailing programs out of a make-shift container and is also continuing to organize keelboat and catamaran sailing events as well as adult learn to sail classes.  The volunteer committee, alongside dedicated community members, is working tirelessly towards the reinstatement of the club rooms. The building may be unusable for the time being but the mana of the club is very much alive. Still we rise!
