Planning for Library holiday programme in Whitianga

TCDC librarians from thames, Tairua and Mercury Bay have been working hard to put together a 'distance friendly' holiday programme for kids in the Thames Coromandel District Library area.

Although we will not be hosting in-person events and activities for kids this summer due to COVID restrictions, we have many exciting distance-friendly and at-home plans!

Elsa Klein - TCDC Library Assistant

During January, TCDC libraries, including Mercury Bay Library, Thames Library and Tairua Library will be handing out take-home activity packs for children. The libraries will host drop-in crafts that can be completed while visiting too. The idea is to provide as much activity for the children without having events that encourage big congregations at one time. Kids can stop in the library any time from the 10th of January and there will be something exciting to work on.

Sneaky Spies and missions at the library

The theme this year is Spies! The activity packs will have all kinds of activities around espionage – for example code crackers, invisible ink, and treasure hunts.

There will be two packs available: one aimed for ages 5-7, the other for ages 8-12.

In the library a table will be set up with a fun spy-themed activity or craft that will be rotated each week, so kids can come back throughout the month for new missions. Programmes will begin when the library teams are back from the holidays.

What to expect, without giving too much away...

  • Spy Passports
  • Fingerprinting and analysis
  • A reading challenge, earning stamps in their spy passport
  • Scavenger hunts
  • Spy disguises.

We’ve got an amazing team here and in Thames working on pulling together activities that can be both interactive and COVID-friendly – certainly a challenge, but we’re looking forward to it.
