'Giving by gifting' tree returns to provide Christmas cheer

The Guthrie Bowron team have been co-ordinating the Christmas pledging tree for an incredible ten years. The successful initiative has returned this December to bring Christmas cheer back to local individuals and families in need. Members of the public are invited to get into the spirit by selecting a pledge card and placing an anonymous gift under the Guthrie Bowron Xmas tree by the 16th December.

This year will see 50+ local families and approximately 250 gifts distributed to recipients who work with Whitianga Social Services benefitting from the pledging tree.

How does the Pledging Tree work?

Visit the team at Guthrie Bowron on Joan Gaskell Drive and choose an anonymous recipient(s) from the tags on the Christmas tree. The tags range in age groups from the very young to the elderly, singles, couples and families. You are welcome to pick one that suits you.

  1. Choose a pledge tag off the tree (let the team know what one you've taken)
  2. Buy and wrap your gifts
  3. Return your gifts to the Christmas tree by December 16th
  4. Enjoy the warm feeling you get!
  5. Whitianga Social Services distribute the gifts in time for Xmas day.

We have such a wonderful response from the community for this initiative each year - in 2022 alone there were 286 gifts distributed to families in need, and we would love support again this year for the GB Pledging Tree. It's been a particularly tough year for many in our community including young families, individuals and the elderly. We really encourage any members of the public that can to support us and the whanau in the community again this year. We really appreciate all the help and support that members of the public can give us at this time of year. We look forward to seeing you in store soon at the Pledging Tree!
