An opportunity for community and visitors to come together to celebrate the Māori new year at beautiful Kuaotunu. Excellent opportunities to view stars and a vibrant community.
Stargazing, Art and Community Celebration
Friday 10 July 2026
6am - Hautapu ceremony community celebration at dawn in Kūaotunu.
- Gather at 5:45am for 6am start on Kūaotunu Reserve (opp. Luke’s Kitchen)
- To finish when the sun has risen (7.29am sunrise)
- 9am - Exhibition opening at Kūaotunu Hall, all welcome
- 10am-4pm Wananga - at the Kūaotunu Hall - demonstrations of Harakeke, Aku (clay) and more!
- 6pm (time TBC) - Bonfire Kūaotunu boat ramp. All welcome, BYO guitar and marshmellows.
Exhibition 10 July to 12 July
Nine local artists have created artwork around each of the Matariki stars with an Art show running through the weekend, July 10 to 12.
