Mercury Bay Art Escape Weekends Whitianga and Mercury Bay

What to Expect

Plan a trip to the Eastern Coromandel over the first two weekends of March (2nd and 3rd and 9th and 10th March) to enjoy visiting the art studios of the Mercury Bay Art Escape’s talented artists. The area from Tairua, Whenuakite, Cooks Beach, Hahei, Hot Water Beach through to Whitianga and Kuaotunu is well known for its immense artistic talent.

The Open Studios weekends provide the opportunity to interact with the artists in their creative space and to visit galleries, soak up coastal scenery and enjoy the cafes, breweries and wineries in the area. With approx 35 Mercury Bay Art Escape artists to visit, including three Art Groups, they present a wide range of media, including woodwork, pottery, sculpture, hand forged knives, lamp-worked glasswork, flax weaving, mosaics, painting, photography, and printmaking.

Guest speaker is to be confirmed for the Gala Opening of the Mercury Bay Art Escape Showcase Exhibition on Friday March 1.  It is planned that all of Art Escape’s 45 members will be exhibiting.

Mercury Bay Art Escape Free Guide
A free Guide will be available on-line as well as at the artists’ studios, galleries and i-SITES on the Coromandel Peninsula and in Auckland at Artis Gallery in Parnell and Studio One on Ponsonby Road.  This comprehensive Art Guide is free and designed for year round use and artists can be visited throughout the year by appointment.

Mercury Bay Art Escape Artists
Many of the Art Escape members are open year-round (by appointment). All of the artists’ details are on the Art Escape website, and a comprehensive Guide is also available to download as an invaluable reference manual featuring short biographies and images of work from all of the artists involved.  Check the Mercury Bay Art Escape website to get a copy of the guide.

If you are new to the area, or you are part of a group which would like to be taken to your chosen selection of studios, please contact the Art Escape team. We can put you in touch with excellent local Tour guides and companies to create a personalised Art Tour for you, or just be the Driver for the day!
