Ka Tito Au – I sing, I compose, I dance: The story of the very colourful Kupe

What to Expect

Ka Tito Au celebrates the long ago exploits of a man many believe was the first visitor to these shores. The play traces Kupe’s whakapapa and his connection to the islands and the ocean, his dramatic expedition on the waka Matahourua, and his climactic battle with the giant octopus Te Wheke-a-Muturangi.
This thrilling odyssey is suitable for adults, youth and children over 8 years old.

Tola Newbery is the solo performer in Ka Tito Au where Kupe tells his own story of the extraordinary journey to Aotearoa. Tola infuses his extraordinary performance with creative modern flourishes and stirring waiata tawhito (traditional Māori songs).

This contemporary drama is written by award-winning Kiwi writer, poet, playwright and storyteller, Apirana Taylor and directed by Murray Lynch.

Mixing history, mythology and symbolism, Ka Tito Au is Kupe’s legend as you’ve never heard it before. It is a marvel of storytelling that everyone should experience.
