What to Expect

Preserve New Chum for Everyone is a Registered Charity. Our governing committee comprises like minded persons committed to the preservation of iconic New Chum-Wainuiototo Beach for everyone. The impact of development, housing, people numbers and attendant recreational vehicles would destroy the very values that make New Chum unique. These values include its isolation, remoteness, pristine vistas and endangered wildlife.
The significant heritage value associated with this land further entrenches the importance of this iconic location, untouched for generations. In addition it hosts significant Nikau & remnant pohutakawa forests all adding to its outstanding coastal & heritage value.

Lonely Planet, Britain's Observer and National Geographic judge New Chum – Wainuiototo “One of the Top 3 Wilderness Beaches in the World” and “one of New Zealand's most beautiful locations”, As well as “One of the top 20 Beaches in the World”
In 2010 coastal Land Trust Holdings put in an application to develop 21 lots at TePungapunga.
A proposal was presented to the Government in November 2010 by the developers that would protect and save New Chum. This was withdrawn early 2011 by the developers before the Government could respond and there have been subsequent applications to develop 12 lots, 6 lots, 5 lots with 3 residences submitted by John Darby of Northern Land Property Ltd.and currently in October 2014 by Ross & Deidre Mear and George Kerr 4 lots + 1 conservation lot, covering approx 60 hectares. Mayor Leach has said the application will be publicly notified.
Waikato Regional Council and the Thames Coromandel District Council have passed resolutions that agree in principle to assisting with the preservation of New Chum. Other stakeholders have also committed to finding a solution to save New Chum.

New Chum is one of the last remaining Beaches on the Coromandel that is not developed. The unique "experience" that is New Chum Beach must be preserved for future generations.
As John Key said on a trip to Whitianga early in 2014 "We want people to look back in 150 years and say 'they got it right'."
New Chum Beach is a 'National Treasure' and a major tourist attraction on the Coromandel Peninsula.....................

In May 2015 the applicants Ross Mear & George Kerr, withdrew the application to develop the land behind the New Chum Beach catchment. This is positive news for the preservation of New Chum and we are hopeful a resolution with Govt, DoC, TCDC, WRC, PNC4E & the Developers will eventuate with an outcome that ultimately preserves this last bastion of undeveloped wilderness beach on the Coromandel Peninsula.
