How to get there

By car

  • You can get to Whitianga by car following SH25.
  • By ferry from Mercury Bay South (Flaxmill Bay, Cooks Beach, Hahei and Hot Water Beach). Catch the Ferry from Ferry Landing to Whitianga Wharf. This is a short ferry ride and Whitianga Wharf is centrally located in Whitianga township.

Things to do for the kids

The playground at the Esplanade Reserve beside the wharf is magic. It has a glorious water view and is close to cafes to grab a take away latte. More About Whitianga

The township bustles during summer and maintains its vibe throughout the year with a growing number of events being attracted to town. The Scallop Festival is the keystone of these attracting thousands to taste the local delicacy. Whitianga has a lovely calm bay and beach that is ideal for young families and safe for swimming for much of the year. Some visitors come to stay for a while and some remain for a lifetime.

A visit to Ferry Landing wharf, the oldest working wharf in the southern hemisphere is a short ferry ride from Whitianga Wharf, and provides easy access to Whitianga Rock, an ancient Maori pa site.

For visitors who have not returned to Whitianga in a while, the reaction is usually the same. "Whitianga has changed a lot". The town's population of 4368 residents grew by 16 per cent since the previous census in 2006 with the addition of 600 residents compared to seven years ago. The Coromandel District has a resident population of 26,178. The Mercury Bay Area School role is steadily increasing with over 900 students enrolled as new families come to settle in Mercury Bay – Te Whanganui a Hei .
